But paying less doesn\u2019t necessarily mean buying cheap. It often means that a company can offer a product more efficiently or price it more competitively. That\u2019s what competition is about. Heck, that\u2019s what capitalism is all about.<\/p>\n<p>But is it always a good thing? Sure, if you know what you\u2019re paying for. A lower-rate mortgage loan may be better than a higher one when buying a house. A lower price offer for a car may be better than a higher offer for the same car but from another dealer. Lower futures commissions are always more attractive than higher commissions\u2014BUT, and here\u2019s where you\u2019ve got to stop and think: what exactly are you paying for?<\/p>\n<h2><div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:10px\"><\/div>How Discount Futures Brokers Compete with Commissions<\/h2>\n<p>Suppose you come across a futures brokerage ad that touts \u201ccheapest futures commissions.\u201d You\u2019ll likely encounter two types of brokerages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One that charges a flat, transparent, and uniform commission rate; and<\/li>\n<li>Another whose individual brokers can charge different commission rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:10px\"><\/div>The second option might seem favorable to you as one individual broker might charge a more competitive commission than another broker sitting across from him.<\/p>\n<p><em>But here\u2019s a dirty little secret: <\/em>even if another broker charges a more competitive rate, more often than not, you\u2019re stuck with whichever broker first registered you in their system as a client (brokerage firms do this to avoid broker fights within the company).<\/p>\n<p>So, although brokerages encourage competition within their firms, <em>you might not necessarily benefit from this intra-institutional competition<\/em>, not when it comes to switching brokers and benefiting from their lower rates.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s back up even further and look at how commissions are quoted, as not all brokers aim for transparency&#8211;especially in an environment where they can charge different customers different rates.<\/p>\n<h2>Breaking Down the Futures Commission Quote<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:10px\"><\/div>\u201cWe charge you $0.50 commissions per contract plus fees.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cJust $1 round turn plus exchange fees.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201c$1.94 all in.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:10px\"><\/div>Absolutely unclear. And then a broker tries to pull this on you: \u201cYour current broker charges you $1.00 round turn, we only charge $0.75 for each contract plus fees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This last example may sound petty, but it\u2019s been done more often than you think. Some discount futures brokers rely on the likelihood that customers are suckers who don\u2019t get the terminology&#8211;and often they\u2019re right! Many traders don\u2019t understand all the terminology.<\/p>\n<p>So here it is, again (you can <a href=\"https:\/\/optimusfutures.com\/blog\/commissions-trade-futures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">read the article we wrote about futures commissions here<\/a>) the components of a futures trading commission rate:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Exchange\/Clearing Fees (FCM + Exchange)<\/li>\n<li>National Futures Association (NFA) Fees<\/li>\n<li>Execution Fees (Technology \/ Order Routing)<\/li>\n<li>Brokerage Commissions<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:5px\"><\/div>Next time you get a quote, ask your broker to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e_fC9YMte6k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">break each cost down<\/a> to these four essentials. If your futures broker won\u2019t offer you immediate transparency, then you can do it yourself by asking your broker to itemize it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:10px\"><\/div>Now that we\u2019ve covered the foggy world of \u201ccompetitive\u201d futures commissions, let\u2019s get down to the main issue, whether cheaper commissions can help you become a better trader?<\/p>\n<h2>Will Cheaper Commissions Help You in the Long Run?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:10px\"><\/div>Let me ask you this: when the Federal Reserve slashes interest rates, making it easier for businesses to borrow money for investment, does \u201ccheap money\u201d help or hurt most businesses?\u00a0 The answer depends on the business, whether a given business \u201cinvests\u201d or \u201cmalinvests\u201d the money.<\/p>\n<p>Business owners who are less experienced, less skilled, or just plain reckless will make poor use of \u201ccheap money.\u201d As a result, many businesses eventually go bust.<\/p>\n<p>Trading&#8211;as a form of <em>business<\/em>&#8211;isn\u2019t any different.<\/p>\n<p>There are way too many inexperienced traders out there who are not ready for the full risks of frequent speculation opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>If cheaper commissions means the opportunity to trade <em>more frequently<\/em> and to trade <em>larger contract sizes,<\/em> then it\u2019s like placing a regular commuter wanna-be race-car driver into a major race with a car capable of driving at 200 mph.<\/p>\n<p>No sane person would do that. Yet too many sane \u201ctraders\u201d don\u2019t see the risks of doing the equivalent in the field of futures trading.<\/p>\n<p>Many traders who study under so-called \u201ctrading gurus\u201d are often taught to seek the lowest commissions to slow down the erosion of the students\u2019 profits.<\/p>\n<p>What profits? Most of these coached day traders do poorly. A higher commission rate may only slow that trader down. And perhaps that is what might keep them in the game&#8211;<em>slowing down<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2><div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:5px\"><\/div>Low Commissions Play a Minor Role in Trading Growth if you are a Disciplined Trader<\/h2>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:10px\"><\/div>The best advice here is to focus on your game and to stop spending too much time comparing futures brokers\u2019 commissions.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, <em>a higher commission may help save yourself from yourself!<\/em> Imagine having to carefully plan each trade, knowing that you can only make a few trades at any given time&#8211;no throwaway efforts. This is, perhaps, what you<em> should <\/em>be doing.<\/p>\n<p>Or you can follow the average day trading herd and race off the cliff&#8211;<em>at a steep discount<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, if you are trading the S&amp;P 500, Dow, Nasdaq (or any other index), you are not \u201cbuying\u201d those indexes&#8211;you are buying risk.<\/p>\n<p>And if you want to buy more risk for cheap, well that\u2019s your business.
